The Starting Point.

1,400 years ago, on the eastern shores of Lough Swilly, a monastery was founded by St Mura, the patron saint of the Uí Neill dynasty and descendent of Eoghan, son of Niall of the Nine Hostages. This is said to be the burial place of St Mura, exquisitely marked by a cross-slab representing one of the most important surviving examples of early Irish ecclesiastical art and one of the most outstanding Early Christian monuments in Donegal.

‘To record, conserve and protect the heritage of Fahan’

THE VILLAGE

An early medieval monastic settlement Othan Mór was founded at Fahan over 1,400 years ago. Its significant social and economic standing was the foundation from which the village has grown ever since. The local community is invested in safeguarding the integrity and conservation of the historic church, graveyard, and St Mura’s Cross-Slab. This will ensure the continued and future enjoyment and appreciation of this unique site of national significance.

Fahan is steeped in history. Check out its development since its earliest times….
